Autism-Affirming Therapy for Teens and Adults
By Donavan Ross, LPC · 2026-10-19
Being autistic or neurodivergent in a world built for neurotypical brains can be exhausting and isolating. A lot of the autistic teens and adults I work with have spent years being told to try harder to fit a mold that was never made for them. Affirming therapy takes a different starting point: your brain is valid, and the goal is not to make you less autistic. It is to help with the things that actually get in the way, and to help you understand and work with how you are wired.
What Affirming Support Means
Affirming care means we do not treat autism as a problem to be fixed. We treat you as a whole person with real strengths and real challenges, and we build support around your actual needs rather than around looking more neurotypical.
That shift matters. When the pressure to mask eases and the support fits how your brain really works, a lot of the secondary struggles — the anxiety, the shutdowns, the burnout — have room to settle.
What We Help With
Much of the work is with the things that pile up around being neurodivergent in a demanding world. That often includes anxiety, autistic burnout, emotional regulation, and the sensory and social overload of school, work, and relationships.
We also support self-understanding, especially for people identified later in life who are making sense of it now, and we help with co-occurring depression or trauma when it is part of the picture.
- Anxiety and autistic burnout.
- Emotional regulation and overwhelm.
- Sensory and social stress.
- Self-understanding and late-identified autism.
- School, work, and relationships.
Therapy, Not Testing
To be clear about what we offer: our focus is affirming therapy and support, not formal diagnostic evaluation. If you are seeking a diagnosis, we are glad to point you toward testing providers, and we can support you before, during, or after that process.
We work with autistic and neurodivergent teens ages 12 and up and adults, in person in Pocatello and by telehealth across Idaho. A free 15-minute consultation is a comfortable way to start.
Frequently asked
Do you diagnose autism?
Our focus is affirming therapy and support rather than formal diagnostic testing. We can refer you to evaluation providers and support you through that process if a diagnosis is what you are looking for.
Is this only for kids?
No. We work with autistic and neurodivergent teens (12 and up) and adults, including people who were identified later in life and are making sense of it now.
